Hong Kong Food Expo draws shoppers despite heatwave

Exhibitors in the five-day event expected business to rise about 10% this year, and one visitor said he paid around HK$2,000 for frozen seafood and other items.

Thousands of Hongkongers turned out for the annual Food Expo at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai on Thursday, shopping for items such as abalone, frozen salmon and instant noodles even as temperatures stayed high, according to SCMP Economy.

The five-day fair is one of five trade events that opened on the same day, attracting visitors that included older residents and families with young children.

Some exhibitors forecast a roughly 10% increase in business this year, while attendees highlighted the value of buying multiple brands at the same venue.

One visitor, a 68-year-old retired driver Albert Wong, said he spent about HK$2,000 (US$255) on items including frozen salmon, sausages, spaghetti and tea bags, and estimated expo pricing was about 30% cheaper than elsewhere.
