Hong Kong public rental housing wait time rises to 4.8 years

Authorities said 100,500 general applications were still waiting for standard public rental housing as of end-June.

Hong Kong public rental housing wait times inched higher, with the composite waiting period for general applicants for long- and short-term subsidised flats edging up to 4.8 years at the end of June, the Housing Bureau said.

While the composite figure rose, the bureau reported that the average waiting time for general applicants to be housed in a standard public rental home in the past 12 months fell by 0.1 years to 5.5 years compared with the first quarter.

The bureau linked short-term fluctuations in the average waiting time to a positive trend, saying that applicants who had been waiting longer in urban areas were allocated homes in the second quarter.

Data from April to June showed about 3,200 general applicants, including 330 single senior residents, were housed in standard public rental homes, and as of end-June there were 100,500 general applications from families and single elderly people still waiting.
