Hong Kong woman acquitted over 2019 protest charges after Australia trip
A magistrate said prosecutors did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she carried alleged laser pointers and spray paint for illegal purposes on Sept. 8, 2019.
A Hong Kong magistrate acquitted casino cashier Ami Chan Hui-ching of two charges linked to the 2019 anti-government protests, after finding prosecutors failed to prove her involvement beyond a reasonable doubt, according to SCMP Economy.
The court ruled on Thursday that prosecutors did not establish that Chan, who was 21 at the time of the ruling and 15 in 2019, carried two laser pointers and three bottles of spray paint for illegal purposes on Sept. 8, 2019, SCMP Economy reported.
Magistrate Edward Wong Ching-yu said there was no demonstration or people gathering when police intercepted Chan and five men outside a public toilet on Oil Street in Fortress Hill that night.
The magistrate also rejected testimony suggesting Chan walked faster after seeing police, noting the officer did not record that detail in the written statement, SCMP Economy reported.
