India pursues role in France’s FCAS sixth-generation fighter program
The Indian defence ministry said it has initiated efforts to join the French-led Future Combat Air System despite an ongoing shortage of combat jets.
India is looking to join France’s Future Combat Air System, a French-led program aimed at developing next-generation combat aircraft and connected air warfare capabilities, according to an update to Indian lawmakers reported by SCMP Economy.
The defence ministry said it has “initiated efforts” to participate in FCAS, which targets sixth-generation systems that pair piloted fighter jets with drones, sensors, and data networks to share information and coordinate strikes.
While analysts cited by SCMP Economy said the move could strengthen India’s long-term defence partnership with France, they also said it is unlikely to address India’s immediate shortage of combat jets.
SCMP Economy also noted the FCAS effort is designed to cover both advanced aircraft technology and the industrial work of designing and building future combat systems.
