India’s coal mine proposals surge, lifting global additions by 11%

India proposed up to 638 million metric tons of new coal power capacity last year, while global new coal mine additions fell nearly 40% year over year to 113 million tons annually.

India has emerged as the leading driver of new coal capacity planning, proposing as much as 638 million metric tons annually in new coal power capacity last year, up from 329 million tons a year earlier, according to data cited by Reuters from Global Energy Monitor.

That shift lifted the global total for the year by 11%, even as Global Energy Monitor data shows new coal mine additions fell by nearly 40% year over year to 113 million tons annually.

The reporting highlights India’s focus on energy security, using both domestic coal production expansion and existing sources of power generation to meet fast-growing demand.

India also aims to grow domestic coal output to 1.15 billion metric tons in the current fiscal year and 1.5 billion metric tons by fiscal 2026/27, with coal expected to remain a key part of the power system for the next two decades, Reuters said.
