Mekong floods displace tens of thousands across Myanmar and Laos

Surging waters have displaced tens of thousands of people across Myanmar and Laos, with Thai farming communities along the Mekong River bracing for continued dangerous conditions as heavy rains persist, according to SCMP Economy. The outlet reports that monsoon flooding is an annual feature of the region, but environmental campaigners say damage is being worsened by changing weather patterns and deforestation, as well as a chain of dams on major rivers like the Mekong and smaller tributaries that shift natural water flow and drainage.

SCMP Economy also cites unverified images circulating on Thai television showing torrents of water spilling from a dam spillway in Laos, with residents sheltering on rooftops while awaiting rescue. Aerial footage described by the outlet shows large areas submerged, while flash floods have damaged roads and bridges in mountainous terrain.

In Laos, SCMP Economy says a resource crunch following a months-long fuel and inflation crisis has further reduced the ability of civil society to assist, leaving government rescue efforts overstretched and under-equipped.
