Metaplanet launches BitBonds with $1.3M private bond sale
The inaugural unsecured senior bonds mature in about three years and pay fixed annual interest of 4% to 4.3%.
Japan’s bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet has launched a continuous bond issuance program called BitBonds, and completed its first private debt sale, according to CoinDesk.
The company placed four privately issued series totaling about 200 million yen, or roughly $1.3 million, as unsecured, unrated senior bonds with maturity in about three years. The bonds carry annual interest rates ranging from 4.0% to 4.3%.
Metaplanet said the solicitation began in late July and has now closed, citing an Aug. 13 disclosure. It positioned BitBonds as a new fixed-rate funding channel alongside common stock, equity-linked securities, and preferred shares, with future issuance depending on funding needs, market conditions, and investor demand.
Because the notes are unsecured and unrated, investors face indirect exposure to Metaplanet’s credit and the company’s bitcoin-linked balance sheet volatility, and liquidity before maturity is not guaranteed. CoinDesk also noted the company said it is considering moving to registered public offerings for future issuance, and that transfer restrictions apply to the current private placement.
