Study flags 65,340 risky crypto addresses linked to $574.8 million in losses

The research estimates losses tied to those addresses on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain at 126,982.9 ETH and 17,726.7 BNB, using May 2025 reference prices.

A study presented at USENIX Security '26 identified 65,340 risky crypto addresses involved in misuse across Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain, valuing associated native-token losses at more than $574.8 million, according to CryptoSlate.

The researchers pegged the token losses at 126,982.94 ETH and 17,726.7 BNB. The valuation reflects May 2025 reference prices of $4,408 per ETH and $847 per BNB, rather than the dollar value of tokens at the time losses occurred, the outlet reported.

The paper distinguishes between two newly described active attack vectors and broader detected misuse. Two active vectors account for about $15.7 million, or 2.7%, of the larger total, CryptoSlate said.

For one vector, the study describes contract-account misuse where funds can be trapped at a no-contract-code address until malicious code is deployed, with 469 malicious contracts tied to losses of 3,446.37 ETH and 431.79 BNB identified. The second vector involves externally owned account misuse using EIP-7702, where a delegated account forwards deposits, with the analysis finding more than 17,200 delegated addresses and losses of 25.86 ETH plus 33.45 BNB, CryptoSlate reported.
