Vietnam begins building its most advanced domestically produced frigate

The frigate, designed for anti-submarine and air defense roles, is set to be built over 36 months at Song Thu in Da Nang, with Viettel supporting construction and integration work.

Vietnam has started building what state media describes as its largest and most modern combat ship produced domestically, a frigate aimed at anti-submarine operations and equipped with phased-array radar, air-defense missiles and anti-ship missiles, according to SCMP Economy citing Vietnamese coverage.

SCMP Economy reports the vessel is being constructed at the Vietnamese defense ministry’s Song Thu shipyard in Da Nang City, with Viettel, a state-owned military technology and telecommunications group, involved alongside the navy and other defense units including for weapons and equipment integration.

The project is tied to Vietnam’s broader goal of developing a defense industry that is autonomous and self-reliant, with a government statement describing the program as dual-use and modern.

SCMP Economy adds analysts expect Vietnam to keep relying on foreign technology for high-end components such as engines and sensors even as it expands domestic defense manufacturing capabilities.
