Zhu Rongji tributes pour in as Malaysia’s Anwar cites economic ties

Zhu, a former Chinese premier, died on Wednesday at age 97, with Anwar saying their cooperation helped strengthen the economic foundation still underpinning Malaysia-China relations.

Tributes have flooded in for former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji, a reformist statesman credited with helping integrate China’s economy into the global system, following his death on Wednesday at age 97, according to SCMP Economy.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim posted a personal tribute on social media calling Zhu “a good friend,” saying the two worked together to strengthen economic ties between the two countries and that the foundation still underpins the relationship today.

Anwar also recalled a visit in which Zhu surprised him by selecting Chinese classics for his home library, which Anwar said he still owns.

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also described Zhu as an “old friend” and highlighted his support for a joint economic megaproject between Singapore and China, as noted by SCMP Economy.
