Extreme heat follows second derailment as rail lines shut in Essex
Network Rail said the UK’s fifth heatwave of the summer has posed exceptional challenges, with lines closed between Wickford and Southend Victoria and major disruption expected.
Network Rail said the UK’s fifth heatwave of the summer has presented exceptional challenges to the railway after two trains derailed in less than 24 hours, according to the Guardian Business.
On Friday, British Transport Police confirmed the rear carriages of a Greater Anglia train derailed in an upright position at Wickford railway station in Essex, and there were no reported injuries. The train had about 40 people onboard traveling from Southend to London Liverpool Street.
The derailment came a day after two people were seriously injured when several Southern train carriages left the track near Lewes in East Sussex and ended up on their side, trapping passengers. The service from London Victoria to Eastbourne, carrying about 150 people, was evacuated, and BTP said on Friday the injuries were not life-threatening.
For the Essex incident, the National Rail website said all lines were closed between Wickford and Southend Victoria, preventing trains from running between London Liverpool Street and Southend Victoria. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch said it deployed inspectors to gather evidence, and Network Rail said it would conduct internal investigations while asking people to avoid speculating on the cause, per the report.
