India targets coal demand of 1.6 billion tons by 2030

India plans a coal trading exchange and aims to boost domestic supply to improve transparency and energy security as coal demand rises.

India’s coal demand is expected to climb to 1.6 billion tons by 2030 from about 1.2 billion tons now, driven by higher electricity generation and industrial activity, Indian Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt said, according to OilPrice.

India is also looking to create a coal trade exchange to build a more transparent market for buyers and sellers, with the longer-term goal of enabling coal derivatives trading in the country, OilPrice reported.

The secretary linked the projected increase to India’s shift from a scarcity scenario to a surplus scenario, arguing that more efficient, transparent, and market-driven mechanisms are needed for coal trade.

OilPrice added that coal remains a key pillar of India’s electricity mix, with about 60% of total power output coming from coal-fired power, even as renewable capacity additions continue to grow.
