Indian equities slip as Tata leadership worries and metals fall
The Sensex ended Friday at 78,009.25, down 0.09%, and the Nifty 50 closed at 24,366.00, down 0.12%, after Tata Group market value fell and the BSE Metal index retreated.
Indian stocks ended lower as investors digested Tata Group leadership transition uncertainty and a sell-off in metals, despite gains from an AI-led rally elsewhere in Asia, according to LiveMint Markets. Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran decided not to seek another term, raising questions over succession and governance at the conglomerate.
On Friday, the Sensex fell 0.09% to 78,009.25 and the Nifty 50 declined 0.12% to 24,366.00. For the week, the Sensex dropped 0.6% and the Nifty 50 slipped 0.8%.
Tata-related concerns weighed further after the announcement, with the combined market capitalization of Tata Group companies falling nearly 2% on Wednesday, the outlet reported. Tata Group market value has declined nearly 6% so far in 2026 amid global uncertainty and market volatility.
Performance was uneven across sectors, with the BSE Telecommunication index rising 3.7% during the week and Realty gaining 1.3%. Metals were the weakest segment, with the BSE Metal index down 1.4%, while FMCG fell 1% and Energy and Information Technology declined 0.8% and 0.6%, respectively.
