Lawmakers demand answers on conditions aboard US carrier Lincoln
A replacement deployment is expected as the Abraham Lincoln completes nine months in the Middle East, but the Pentagon has disputed claims of worsened conditions.
Lawmakers are pressing Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth for answers about conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, as reports describe worsening onboard life for sailors during the ship’s Middle East deployment tied to the ongoing Iran war, according to SCMP Economy.
The carrier is now in its ninth month of deployment and is expected to be replaced in the region by the USS George Washington, a move that supporters say would provide relief for the Lincoln’s crew and their families, SCMP Economy reported.
Agence France-Presse also cited concerns from Jonathan Schroden, chief research officer at the Centre for Naval Analyses, who said the ship’s quarters are cramped even in peacetime, with long workdays, limited fresh air, and difficulties getting exercise and sleep.
Schroden added that stress from sustained combat operations, including constant threat to the ship, compounds those challenges, while Hegseth said the situation has been misrepresented, SCMP Economy reported.
