Lawyer linked to Lion Air crash compensation sentenced in US court

For families of victims of the 2018 Lion Air crash in Indonesia, a US court development has added to their frustration with compensation, according to SCMP Economy. The crash killed 189 people, and the article describes how US legal proceedings have continued to delay or complicate payouts.
SCMP Economy reports that Keith Griffin, a California lawyer who worked with disgraced attorney Tom Girardi on Lion Air compensation matters, was sentenced by a federal court in Chicago to one day in prison with credit for time served. Griffin also received two years of supervised release, including requirements to comply with court conditions and report to probation officials.
The outlet says Griffin pleaded guilty to criminal contempt of court after admitting he knew Girardi failed to distribute settlement funds to the families despite a court order requiring the money to be paid.
The article also reiterates that Girardi was convicted of illegally pocketing more than US$2 million meant for the Lion Air victims’ families, along with US$15 million in other compensation and personal injury cases, and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison.
