Record rainstorm disrupts transport, stranding Hong Kong travellers to Narita

Cathay Pacific will waive rebooking and rerouting fees for affected customers as some tour groups seek longer alternative routes to Narita.

Hong Kong tour groups returning from Tokyo are scrambling to reach Narita Airport after a record rainstorm on Thursday disrupted trains and roads, leaving thousands of travellers stranded overnight, including Hongkongers who spent the night on trains and at the airport, according to SCMP Economy.

Cathay Pacific, the city’s flag carrier, said it will waive rebooking and rerouting fees to give affected customers greater flexibility. EGL Tours executive director Steve Huen Kwok-chuen said one tour group had already headed to Narita Airport in Chiba prefecture and two other groups were scheduled to return on Friday as flights continued to operate as normal.

Huen said the main road from the city to Narita Airport has issues, requiring an alternative route that takes longer. He added that while the rainfall on Thursday had been extremely heavy, the weather had eased slightly, with blue skies and brighter conditions in Chiba reported on Friday morning.
