US says Iran war priority is lowering gasoline prices for Americans
The comments point to control of the Strait of Hormuz as a central factor, with the outlet noting Iran has largely shut it down in retaliation.
The United States is shifting its top priority in the Iran war toward reducing fuel costs for Americans, Vice-President J.D. Vance said, emphasizing cheaper petrol prices over the conflict’s nuclear aims, according to SCMP Economy. Vance said on Fox News that getting oil flowing freely through the Strait of Hormuz is now taking precedence, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said new economic punishment to wear down Tehran is imminent.
SCMP Economy reported that the remarks by Vance and Bessent underscore the leverage Iran has gained by disrupting the Strait of Hormuz, which the outlet described as a critical fuel supply conduit. The outlet added that Vance framed Iran’s actions as finding a bargaining chip as the administration seeks a way out of the war and appears reluctant to resume large scale attacks.
The outlet also said that the war now centers on control of the strait, after it was open before Trump started the war along with Israel in late February. It added that Iran has all but shut down the passage in retaliation, contributing to the change in focus.
SCMP Economy further noted that President Donald Trump’s approval rating is falling, the war is unpopular among Americans, and the November midterm election approaches, with the political calendar potentially increasing pressure around energy prices.
