South Korea unveils SEED plan to build seven post-AI industries

The strategy targets growth that OECD projects could drop to a record low 1.52% next year, citing limits of a semiconductor export boom.

South Korea has unveiled a long-range strategy aimed at strengthening its economy in a post-AI world, as it looks to offset sluggish growth tied to an ageing population and heavy reliance on semiconductor exports, according to SCMP Economy.

The plan, announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on Wednesday, sets out seven “Strategic Emerging Engines for Disruptive Innovation,” or SEEDs, spanning small modular reactors, nuclear fusion, breakthrough renewable energy, quantum technology, space and aviation, advanced biotechnology, and advanced supply chains.

SCMP Economy reports the government is trying to secure a foothold in technologies that could shape a future beyond AI, with Seoul warning that competition from the United States and China may widen.

The outlet also notes that the OECD projects South Korea’s potential growth could fall to 1.52% next year, and economists say a recent semiconductor export boom is not enough to sustain overall economic momentum.
