China officials fret over lack of US coordination ahead of Xi visit

Just weeks ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first state visit to Washington since 2015, Chinese officials are reportedly increasingly unsettled by chaos inside the Trump administration, according to the South China Morning Post.

The outlet cites sources saying Washington has again failed to show coordinated planning and progress on setting deliverables for the leaders’ summit, and that the situation has deeper implications because the meeting will be held on foreign soil.

One person familiar with the preparations told the newspaper that no US official or agency had yet assumed responsibility for organizing the visit, leaving officials on both sides largely focused on routine steps without clear leadership.

The report also notes that as in Trump’s earlier trip to Beijing, where the Treasury Department and the US Trade Representative played central roles, the State Department has so far remained largely uninvolved, with limited involvement so far on the US side.
