France tax authority confirms breach, exposing 678,438 records

The leaked data includes sensitive personal and financial details for taxpayers and businesses, with the incident following a separate data breach announcement by Trezor.

Bitcoiners have been warned after France’s tax administration confirmed it was hacked, exposing sensitive financial and personal data tied to hundreds of thousands of taxpayers and businesses.

According to Bitcoin Magazine, FrenchBreaches reviewed samples of the leaked data and estimated the impact at roughly 392,867 individuals and 285,570 businesses. Among the individuals, about 26,805 have reported annual taxable income of at least €100,000, 386 exceed €1 million, and eight exceed €10 million.

The outlet also said a hacker using the alias “ZeroBytes” posted on a cybercrime forum that it infiltrated internal DGFiP servers and obtained VPN credentials to access an internal lookup tool. The extraction was reportedly interrupted, leaving what the hacker described as a partial dataset of 678,438 records.

Bitcoin Magazine added that the exposed sample reportedly includes highly sensitive information such as full legal names, dates and places of birth, home and mailing addresses, marital status, number of dependents, internal tax identification numbers, reference taxable income, individual withholding tax rates, and phone numbers. It also noted the incident comes one day after hardware wallet maker Trezor announced a data breach involving customer data.
