Gold in India jumps from ₹89 to about ₹1,54,500 per 10 gm
Over the past decade, gold prices in India rose from ₹28,623 per 10 gm to ₹1,54,500 per 10 gm, a decadal gain of roughly 450%.
Gold prices in India have risen sharply since independence, with the retail bullion market rate moving from about ₹89 per 10 gm in 1947 to around ₹1,54,500 per 10 gm today, according to LiveMint Markets.
The outlet said gold has delivered more than 1,73,500% returns to investors over the 79-year period from independence, and that the last decade alone saw the rate increase from ₹28,623 per 10 gm to ₹1,54,500 per 10 gm.
LiveMint Markets also cited experts who described gold as a haven asset when other investments such as equities, bonds, and currencies face higher risk. They linked the recent rally to global economic uncertainty that began with the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by policy and trade tensions including Trump’s tariffs, and wider geopolitical pressures.
The story added that experts pointed to the 2008 global economic slowdown as a turning point for investor interest in gold, noting a move from about ₹12,500 per 10 gm in 2008 to the current level near ₹1,54,500 per 10 gm.
