Russia bans crypto mining in Moscow and parts of Kursk through 2032

The restrictions also bar participation in mining pools and cite ongoing pressure on the regional power grid, with mining using about 1 gigawatt in the Moscow system.

CoinDesk reports that Russia has banned crypto mining and crypto mining pool participation in Moscow, parts of the Moscow Region, and certain parts of Kursk through Dec. 31, 2032, under government decree No. 936.

The Energy Ministry said the year-round restriction aims to reduce the risk of power-capacity shortages, pointing to how energy-intensive mining continues to strain regional grids.

CoinDesk cites Luxor’s Hashrate Index, saying Russia accounted for an estimated 175 exahashes per second, or 16.4% of Bitcoin’s global computing power, in the first quarter.

Interfax, as cited by CoinDesk, said mining currently consumes roughly 1 gigawatt in the Moscow power system, while regional data-center capacity could reach 3.6 GW, or 17% of peak demand, by 2032.
