Russia plans new arrangements for two Syrian military bases
The Syrian foreign ministry said the two bases would be converted into joint training and capacity building centres, while Russian contingents would reportedly stay in place.
Russia is signaling that its Middle East footprint will remain after the 2024 downfall of Syria’s Assad regime, despite expectations of a sharp decline, according to SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that Moscow previously ran about 100 military facilities in Syria following its 2015 intervention that helped support then president Bashar al-Assad alongside Iran and regional proxies.
In a deal announced by Syria’s foreign ministry, Russia’s two official military bases outside the former Soviet Union would be turned into joint training and capacity building centres under new arrangements designed to preserve mutual interests.
The report adds that no further details were provided, but Russian military contingents would reportedly remain at both facilities under the new framework.
