US immersion schools expand Chinese language programs for young learners

One Oregon K-5 school charges $14,000 per year for full-time immersion classes, and more than half its kindergarten cohort has no Chinese background.

South China Morning Post reports that US K-12 immersion schools are expanding Chinese language programs for early-age students, with schools targeting an age when experts say language acquisition is easiest.

In Portland, Oregon, the Goodtime Chinese School runs summer Chinese instruction for young learners and has a K-5 campus model, where the school charges US$14,000 per year for full-time immersion classes.

According to South China Morning Post, the school said more than half of its current cohort of 100 kindergarteners have no Chinese background, including children who switch languages readily during instruction.

The school’s founder and director also said Chinese is a “major language” that they view as an advantage for students’ future development.
