Worker pay lags inflation again as prices rise

New research finds the gap between wages and inflation reappeared after the 2021 to 2022 surge in prices.

The New York Times Business reports that research finds workers’ pay is once again failing to keep pace with inflation, continuing a pattern seen during the 2021 to 2022 price spike.

According to the reporting, after inflation rose sharply in that earlier period, wages did not match the increase, and the same dynamic is showing up again as prices rise.

The analysis suggests this renewed gap means many workers are again experiencing shrinking purchasing power when costs grow faster than their pay.
