Hong Kong subdivided homes see apparent temperatures hit 52.2°C this summer

A survey of 86 households found daytime apparent temperatures averaged 35.6°C, with hot nights averaging 29.4°C that exceeded the Observatory’s 28°C threshold.

Indoor apparent temperatures in Hong Kong’s subdivided flats and rooftop huts this summer reached 52.21°C, according to a survey released Sunday, as people experienced higher “feels-like” heat when humidity was factored in.

The study, conducted by CarbonCare InnoLab and the Concerning Subdivided Units Alliance, surveyed 86 households across nine districts from June 22 to July 12, including 78 residents living in subdivided flats or rooftop huts.

Daytime apparent temperatures averaged 35.58°C, while average daytime and nighttime temperatures were 29.93°C and 29.42°C, both above the Hong Kong Observatory’s threshold of 28°C for a “hot night.”

Homemakers, who accounted for 48% of the households surveyed, reported frequent fatigue and heat related symptoms, with about 80% reporting at least one physical issue such as thirst, dizziness, or headaches, and 70% of all respondents saying sleep quality was affected, according to SCMP Economy.
