Russia strikes Ukraine steel plant as Kyiv hits Moscow region
The attack damaged key production facilities at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, partially halting production processes, according to the company.
Russia launched a wave of air strikes on Ukraine overnight, killing two people at a steel plant, while Kyiv carried out a heavy drone attack on Russia’s Moscow region that killed one person and set ablaze a warehouse used by Russia’s leading e-commerce retailer, Reuters reported.
Romania said an F-18 fighter on a NATO air policing mission shot down a drone that breached Romanian airspace during the latest attacks, Reuters added. It did not specify the drone’s origin, though a NATO spokesperson said it appeared to be Russian and that the drone entered from Moldova.
Reuters said Russia also struck Ukraine’s largest grain export port on the River Danube near the Romanian border last week after increasing attacks in recent weeks. Ukraine has intensified strikes on Russian targets including oil refineries, and both sides have hit commercial vessels in the Black Sea.
In the latest strikes since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian forces targeted Ukraine’s biggest steel plant in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih said key facilities in power generation and blast furnaces were damaged and production processes were partially halted.
