SpaceX shares trade below IPO highs after volatile post-listing run
SpaceX stock opened at $150 on IPO day, briefly topped $160 and reached $192.50, but later fell back below its $135 IPO price multiple times.
SpaceX shares have shown sharp post-IPO volatility, with the stock opening at $150 and climbing past $160 on IPO day before reaching $192.50 in the following session, according to Yahoo Finance. On the third trading day, the company briefly overtook Amazon to become the fifth-largest publicly traded firm by market value.
Still, the stock also reversed quickly, with Yahoo Finance noting that it returned below its market debut price multiple times. While it has recently climbed back above its $135 IPO price, it remains well off its earlier peak.
Yahoo Finance also cited Alliance Bernstein’s analysis of IPOs that raised at least $50 million over the past 10 years, finding that median returns were a 10% decline six months after lockup expiration. The analysis further highlighted that one in 10 IPO stocks dropped by at least 62% in the six months after traditional lock-up expirations.
For investors holding SpaceX, Yahoo Finance described the need for a plan that includes managing position size relative to the overall portfolio and rebalancing regularly to keep exposure at a comfortable level. The piece also discussed avoiding panic selling if the stock reverses again, including use of risk controls such as stop-loss orders.
