Workday shares jump on report Silver Lake in takeover talks

The stock rose about 18% on August 13 after the Reuters report, and traded as high as $220.50 before volatility halts.

Workday shares surged to their best session since 2016 after Reuters reported that private equity firm Silver Lake is in talks to acquire the human-resources and finance software company.

According to Yahoo Finance, WDAY rose about 18% on August 13 following the report, and climbed as much as 26% to $220.50 intraday before being halted multiple times for volatility.

Yahoo Finance said Reuters reported that negotiations have been ongoing in recent months, but that there is no guarantee a transaction will happen.

Before the news, Workday’s market value was around $43 billion, and a deal of that scale could rank among the largest software buyouts, with the offer potentially reflecting a premium relative to Workday’s depressed trading.

The article also notes that Workday shares had been under pressure through much of 2026, trading more than 40% lower than their 2024 peak, as investors worried AI could erode the value of traditional enterprise software.
