Bitcoin futures open interest outpaces volume, raising liquidity concerns
Bitcoin futures open interest totals about $48 billion versus $25 billion in 24-hour trading volume, a gap that could amplify price moves if many traders exit at once.
Bitcoin futures liquidity concerns are growing as open interest rises much faster than day-to-day trading activity, according to CoinDesk.
As of this writing, total bitcoin futures open positions, or open interest, stand at roughly $48 billion, while 24-hour trading volume in the same market totals about $25 billion, based on data from Coinglass.
CoinDesk said the widening gap can narrow the market’s “exit door” for traders, because open interest can stay elevated when exiting positions are met by new ones, while volume better reflects actual churn and available liquidity.
The outlet warned that if a sudden catalyst prompts many positions to close, forced liquidations could occur due to margin shortages, and with daily volume lagging, the market may struggle to absorb the rush smoothly, potentially leading to more volatile and exaggerated price swings.
