Bitcoin options stay pricey even as the spot market trades quietly

Bitcoin’s 30-day realized volatility is 21.8%, but 30-day implied volatility sits around 36.0%, leaving option premiums elevated despite the range-bound price action.

Bitcoin has been trading in a tight range below $65,000 for weeks, but the cost of bitcoin options has not fallen in line with the calm in the spot market, according to analysis from CoinDesk.

CoinDesk cites data showing bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility at 36.35%, versus 30-day realized volatility at 21.80%, with the implied-versus-realized gap near a one-year high. It also notes one-week implied volatility is elevated relative to realized volatility, which can weigh on returns for option buyers.

The article says the disparity reflects how options are priced based on what the market expects to happen over the coming days or weeks, not on the volatility that has already occurred. It highlights that low realized volatility can encourage buyers who assume protection should be cheap, but higher implied volatility means buyers need larger moves just to reach break-even.

CoinDesk also points to the forward-looking nature of the pricing, noting that bitcoin’s 30-day realized volatility has fallen to the lowest since October 2025, while the 30-day implied level remains about two-thirds higher. On a shorter horizon, it reports one-week at-the-money implied volatility near 29%, versus realized volatility around 16%, again underscoring that options appear rich relative to the recent pace of trading moves.
