Cavco and Champion expect manufactured home chassis removal to take 12 months

The builders say the main upside is greater design flexibility and access to urban and infill markets, but HUD and state rule updates will likely delay benefits for about a year.

Cavco Industries and Champion Homes said that removing the permanent chassis requirement for manufactured homes is less about headline cost savings and more about improving design flexibility and widening access to urban and infill markets, according to HousingWire. The companies pointed to implementation timelines as a key reason benefits may not arrive quickly. They expect federal and state rule updates, including HUD rulemaking, to take 1 year or more, pushing the operational impact out beyond near-term planning.

While some reporting has focused on savings of about $5,000 to $10,000 per home from eliminating the permanent steel chassis, Cavco and Champion executives argued that those figures can be misleading. HousingWire reports that Cavco CEO William Boor said savings would be partly offset by the need for additional structural materials, such as wood.

Boor also expects installation costs to rise as more homes may require cranes rather than being rolled into place, further delaying the net payoff. HousingWire notes that the companies therefore frame the change as a long-term opportunity, rather than an immediate business boost.
