Wildfire smoke renews focus on landlords improving office air quality

During a July smoke wave, The Durst Organization told tenants in advance which filters it used to support a healthier indoor environment.

Wildfire smoke drifting across the U.S. pushed outdoor air into unhealthy ranges in New York City and other densely populated areas last month, reviving attention on how landlords manage the air circulating through office buildings, Bisnow reports.

Bisnow says air quality inside can become less noticeable during clear stretches but can significantly affect the office experience when pollution rises. The article notes air quality is declining across the country, in part due to wildfires in Canada.

The Durst Organization, according to Bisnow, responded to July’s wave by messaging tenants preemptively about the filters in place and what they meant for maintaining a healthier indoor environment than what was outside.

Bisnow adds that research leaders argue indoor air quality can influence cognitive performance, citing Joe Allen, a Harvard professor and director of the Healthy Buildings Program, who said even on the East Coast the impacts of wildfire smoke can persist after visible orange skies fade.
