FTC investigates Epic Systems over potential antitrust issues

Epic runs MyChart and EHR systems used by providers collectively treating more than 280 million people in the U.S., according to the company.

Epic Systems, the privately held healthcare database company behind MyChart and other electronic health record systems, is facing an antitrust investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Reuters reports, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The FTC has sent investigative demands to other health technology firms seeking information on how Epic grants or withholds data access, according to the sources.

Epic said it does not engage in anticompetitive behavior and argues it is a leader in interoperability. A company spokesperson told Reuters that Epic’s products are designed to support patient care.

The investigation comes as Epic is already dealing with legal pressure from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. In December, Paxton sued Epic over claims the company shuts out rivals by holding data hostage through restrictions and fees, which Epic denied, saying provider customers control access to patient records.
