Philippines eyes India model for faster defense self-reliance
Manila is using its first BrahMos missile purchase as part of a broader military modernization push that includes air and missile defense, mid-range launchers, and enhanced radar.
The Philippines is looking to India as a reference point for building defense self-reliance as Manila modernizes its military to help manage maritime disputes, South China Morning Post reports. The effort follows the Philippines purchase of its first BrahMos missiles from Delhi, and analysts say India’s experience is relevant but immediate domestic manufacturing may be less practical.
South China Morning Post says the Philippines is prioritizing deterrence through an integrated air and missile defense system, mid-range launchers, and enhanced radar capabilities. Analysts interviewed by the outlet said cooperation with India in stages could be a more workable route than rushing to manufacture weapons quickly.
The outlet also describes defense cooperation as an increasingly important pillar of the strategic partnership between the Philippines and India. It adds that Ignacio called the BrahMos deal an important component of Manila’s modernization efforts, saying the missiles match the “archipelagic defence” the Philippines wants to build.
