Hong Kong cuts environmental assessment timelines with AI
The government said AI reduced timeframes for collecting environmental data and completing environmental impact assessments from 36 to 48 months down to 15 to 24 months.
Hong Kong authorities said they have cut the time required to complete environmental impact assessments by up to half by using artificial intelligence as part of a broader push to speed public services, with measures rolling out this year and next.
According to SCMP Economy, the first batch includes 30 projects across 13 government departments, covering services such as transport and food business licensing, leisure and sports facilities, environmental hygiene, complaint handling, and environmental protection.
The government, through its AI Efficacy Enhancement Team chaired by Deputy Chief Secretary Warner Cheuk Wing-hing, said AI adoption reduced processing and waiting times for some services by up to 90 per cent.
SCMP Economy reports that the Environmental Protection Department’s AI-backed approach integrates technologies including light detection and ranging, the Internet of Things, and data analytics, shortening EIA timelines for major development projects from 36 to 48 months to 15 to 24 months.
