Intervention risks may cap USD/JPY near 160 as BoJ hike odds rise

OCBC expects September to be the third BoJ rate increase in nine months, but says the yen needs a clearer push toward faster policy normalization to sustain gains.

OCBC analysts Sim Moh Siong and Christopher Wong said September Bank of Japan rate-hike odds have risen sharply, yet the Japanese yen response has been muted, limiting a near-term recovery against the US dollar.

They argue that a sustained yen advance likely requires a stronger signal from the BoJ that policy normalization can proceed faster, rather than just a change in market expectations.

For now, the pair’s downside is tempered by intervention risks, with OCBC expecting USD/JPY to be capped near 160.

The analysts also noted that if the BoJ delivers another hike in September, it would mark its third increase in nine months, the fastest pace of tightening since Japan’s asset bubble collapse in 1989.
