Kushner meets Hamas chief as US tries to salvage Gaza ceasefire roadmap
The US-backed 15-point plan centers on Hamas disarmament and an Israeli withdrawal, ahead of Kushner’s Monday meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
South China Morning Post, citing reporting from the Associated Press, said US negotiator Jared Kushner met Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt on Sunday as part of a new push to move forward on a stalled Gaza ceasefire.
The talks are aimed at salvaging a US-backed 15-point roadmap, which would require Hamas to disarm in Gaza and Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territory, a framework already affected by a lack of progress on disarmament.
The article said the stakes include the lives of some 2 million people in Gaza and the future reconstruction of the crowded enclave, which has been largely controlled by Israeli forces for more than 10 months since the ceasefire ended major military operations.
Kushner is also set to meet Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, after Netanyahu publicly rejected the 15-point plan last week in what the report described as defiance of the Trump administration.
