Meta faces child privacy overhaul demands in states lawsuit trial
US states are seeking up to $1.0 trillion from Meta and additional platform changes, with a jury trial set to start Tuesday under Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.
Meta is facing escalating legal pressure as a jury trial begins Tuesday over claims that its Instagram and Facebook tools unlawfully target and harm young users, according to BBC Business.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed in 2023 by 30 US states, including California and New York. The states allege Meta has violated federal and state privacy laws for children and are seeking upwards of $1 trillion from the company, along with an overhaul of core features.
Among the demanded changes are ending like counts and infinite scroll, as well as limits on how the platforms use notifications to keep young users engaged. The states also argue Meta makes it harder for children to use the apps less, pointing to frequent notifications designed to bring users back.
Meta disputes the allegations and says it strongly disagrees with the claims, according to the outlet. BBC Business reports the trial is before Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, and notes a prior ruling in New Mexico that fined Meta $942 million and ordered similar adjustments.
