Pentagon orders audits of foreign research ties at 30 US universities
Universities must submit findings and proposed mitigation plans, including possible partnership terminations, to the Pentagon by August 31.
The Pentagon has directed 30 US universities to audit their foreign research partnerships, including collaborations with Chinese institutions and organizations linked to former Confucius Institutes, or risk losing eligibility for future federal funding, according to SCMP Economy.
The Department of Defence said the reviews must cover universities academic, financial, and research relationships with foreign “entities of concern,” with a focus on whether sensitive or export-controlled research was exposed.
Universities are required to report their findings and mitigation measures to the department by August 31, giving them about two weeks to complete the process.
The Pentagon did not identify the universities or break out how many notices involved ties with China versus other countries such as Russia or Iran, and the audits cover partners listed under Section 1286 of the 2019 National Defence Authorisation Act, plus groups described as being associated with “rebranded Confucius Institutes.”
