Russia sentences opposition figure Lev Shlosberg to 11 years
The ruling followed charges tied to “discrediting” the military and “false information,” and a separate Supreme Court decision upheld a ban on Yabloko from Russia’s September parliamentary vote.
A Russian court on Monday convicted opposition politician Lev Shlosberg and sentenced him to 11 years and one month in prison for speaking out against the war in Ukraine, a further step in a crackdown ahead of next month’s parliamentary election, the SCMP Economy reported.
Shlosberg, a senior member of the Yabloko party and deputy chairman, was tried in Pskov, about 600 km northwest of Moscow, on charges of “discrediting” and spreading “false information” about the Russian military, according to the report.
The charges stemmed from his calls to end the war and posts on his Telegram channel, including a British tabloid front page image with a headline referencing “her blood” and “his hands” alongside an image involving Russian President Vladimir Putin, SCMP Economy said.
In a separate ruling on Monday, Russia’s Supreme Court upheld an earlier decision to bar Yabloko from the ballot in the September 18 to 20 parliamentary vote, denying the party’s appeal, the outlet added. Shlosberg rejected the charges as unfounded.
