Canada leader talks with Trump as 50% US tariffs loom
The planned duties would apply to goods including wine, hockey sticks and cement, and would target about 5.5% of Canada’s exports to the US, worth roughly US$20 billion, according to Oxford Economics.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump as the two sides move to avert new US tariffs on Canadian goods ahead of a midnight deadline, Ottawa confirmed, according to SCMP Economy citing AFP.
Trump signed orders last month for steep 50% duties, with the White House alleging Canada has given discriminatory treatment to US alcohol, cars and dairy products, and the tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Wednesday.
The planned measures would cover a range of products including wine, hockey sticks and cement, as negotiations enter a critical phase described by Carney as “intense and delicate.”
Oxford Economics estimates Trump’s incoming tariffs target about 5.5% of Canada’s exports to the US, worth about US$20 billion, according to SCMP Economy.
