England will allow disabled people free bus travel 24 hours a day from April

The government says about one million people could benefit, and the change starts in April.

The UK government announced that disabled people in England will be able to use bus passes for free travel at any time of day from April, removing weekday time limits that currently run from 09:30 to 23:00.

The policy also allows pass holders to use free travel at any time on weekends and bank holidays, with the government positioning buses as a widely used transport option and a key support for those who rely on them to work and access daily activities.

The BBC reports that the change is expected to benefit around one million people and is part of a broader focus on reducing the cost of living and encouraging employment, while disability charities welcomed it as removing barriers to everyday life.

The government said the £60m scheme will be funded through the Department for Transport and the Department for Work and Pensions, while critics questioned how the wider set of policies would be paid for.
