Hong Kong declares infected area after cholera cases and deaths
Authorities said they would confiscate any cut fruit sold in street markets found to be offending, as health teams began inspections.
Authorities in Hong Kong moved to contain a cholera threat after confirming four cases, declaring the colony an infected area, and reporting two deaths, according to an SCMP Economy archive account.
The measures included deploying mobile teams of health inspectors alongside police officers to visit street markets across Hong Kong and Kowloon, focusing on cut fruit and other items considered dangerous.
The authorities issued warnings to sellers, but said that from that day forward any offending stocks would be confiscated.
SCMP Economy also noted that two special committees were established to coordinate the response, including a daily meeting led by the Director of Medical and Health Services to oversee health and medical activities during the outbreak.
