Putin to meet Myanmar’s Min Aung Hlaing for security and economic talks
The meeting is slated for Tuesday and is expected to center on economic and security cooperation, as Myanmar seeks supplies of fertiliser and oil alongside weapons.
SCMP Economy reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to host Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing on Tuesday for talks focused on economic and security cooperation.
According to the outlet, Min Aung Hlaing is seeking an economic reboot for a war-ravaged country, including fresh supplies of fertiliser and oil, as well as additional weapons.
The same report says Min Aung Hlaing, a pariah to much of the West over his 2021 coup and his role during the Rohingya ethnic cleansing, has maintained ties with other regional capitals including Beijing, New Delhi and Bangkok.
SCMP Economy adds that Moscow is now joining that group of capitals aiming to draw Myanmar back into the international fold after criticism over an election won by military-backed proxy parties that enabled Min Aung Hlaing to become president.
