Israeli troops fail to evict West Bank settlers after weeklong siege
The standoff at Qusra near Nablus has lasted more than a week, during which supplies were blocked to Palestinians inside homes.
Israeli troops have failed for more than a week to evict a small group of settlers holding out in the occupied West Bank, despite repeated deployments, Agence France-Presse reported. The settlers have been positioned around Qusra near Nablus, where they began besieging Palestinians in their homes by blocking supplies and drawing condemnation.
According to the report, international and domestic criticism escalated after the siege began, and the United States said it requested action by Israel as one of the besieged Palestinians is a US citizen. While Israeli forces deployed troops, the response went beyond condemnations only in limited ways, including detaining one Israeli and dismantling settlers’ tents.
The outlet also said some early soldiers were filmed praying with the settlers. Israeli officials later vowed disciplinary action, as experts cited alleged inertia within the military when stopping surging violence against Palestinians is the task.
