UK grocery price rises slow as shoppers stock up on picnic foods
Worldpanel by Numerator said supermarket prices rose 2.1% in the four weeks to 9 August, the slowest increase since October 2024, with promotions driving 31.3% of sales.
British shoppers leaned into picnic-style food during the heatwave, boosting sales of items such as potato salad, olives, and coleslaw, while grocery price inflation cooled, according to data from Worldpanel by Numerator.
Worldpanel said supermarket prices rose 2.1% in the four weeks to 9 August, down from a 2.6% increase in the prior month and the slowest rise since October 2024.
The firm attributed part of the slowdown to consumers turning to supermarket promotions to cut costs, with deals accounting for 31.3% of all sales across UK supermarkets, the highest level this year.
Spending over the same four-week period averaged £410 on groceries, down £14.24 versus the prior period, while ice-cream and sorbet sales rose 26% and frozen fruit sales increased 48%.
