Nasdaq to add a new 9 PM to 4 AM session starting December 2026
The exchange plans to extend trading to 23 hours a day, five days a week, with a daily one-hour pause from 8 PM to 9 PM ET and the change expected to begin Sunday, 6 December 2026 after SEC approval.
Nasdaq is planning 23-hour trading sessions from December 2026, extending US stock market hours to meet rising global demand for US equities, according to LiveMint Markets. Under the proposal, Nasdaq currently runs from 4 AM to 8 PM ET, and would add a new overnight session from 9 PM to 4 AM ET. Nasdaq said it is engaging with regulators to extend trading hours, and the plan would include its existing extended hours from 4 AM to 9:30 AM ET and 4 PM to 8 PM ET. Nasdaq said the main US trading session, 9:30 AM to 4 PM ET, bookended by the opening and closing crosses, will continue to set prices and promote transparency throughout market hours. The exchange also outlined a one-hour daily trading pause from 8 PM to 9 PM ET to allow for processing and transition to the next trade date. After approval from the US securities markets regulator, the SEC, the 23-hour trading day is expected to begin on Sunday, 6 December 2026. Nasdaq said it will start trading at 9 PM ET on Sunday and conclude at 8 PM ET on Friday, while Nasdaq options exchanges, Nasdaq Texas, and PSX equity exchanges will keep their current schedules.
