QBE creates new data centre insurance role in London
QBE said global data centre capacity is projected to double from 2026 to 2030, adding nearly 100 gigawatts of power, driving demand for new coverage propositions.
International business insurer QBE has appointed Jamie Thompson as Global Director of Data Centres, a newly created role based in London. QBE said Thompson will help develop an integrated insurance proposition aimed at the risks tied to the rapidly expanding data centre sector, with the effort drawing on expertise across underwriting, risk engineering, claims, and distribution.
QBE said the sector is being reshaped by cloud migration and artificial intelligence, and that global data centre capacity is projected to double from 2026 to 2030, adding close to 100 gigawatts of power. The insurer also cited JLL Research data estimating infrastructure investment of up to $3 trillion by 2030 as meeting that demand requires a surge in building and expansion.
QBE said Thompson’s mandate includes addressing emerging coverage gaps and developing a globally consistent approach that incorporates multiple products across the complete data lifecycle and broader risk landscape for businesses and communities. The company described Thompson as having more than two decades at QBE, including prior leadership of its Financial Lines team for international markets and a director role in Canada.
