Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth faces job risk amid shifting US-China ties

Speculation about the Pentagon chief’s job risk comes as US and Chinese defense relations have improved since President Trump and Xi Jinping met in Beijing in May.

Speculation has grown that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth is at increasing risk of losing his job, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The uncertainty lands at a sensitive moment for defense relations between the United States and China, which have shown signs of improvement since Trump and Xi Jinping met in Beijing in May.

SCMP Economy reports that one source familiar with US-China armed forces engagements said there had been contact at almost all levels during Trump’s second term.

The source said relations were the best they had been in more than a decade, even as questions emerge over leadership at the Pentagon.
